Plumbing problems. A wall of a bathroom is opened to find a leak from a pipe leaving rubble on the floor.

When to Repipe Your Plumbing

Repiping your entire plumbing system in the Austin area is not only a lot of work for a plumber, but it is also expensive for a homeowner. Because of that, it’s important to know when your plumbing system needs repiping as opposed to repair or troubleshooting.

One of the things you’ll need to take into account is the material your pipes are made of. Though they are subject to cracking, CPVC, PEX, and PVC pipes are made of types of plastic and are supposed to have an indefinite lifespan. Pipes made of galvanized steel can last between 20 and 50 years, but they’re problematic, as we’ll see. Brass pipes can last between 40 and 70 years, and copper pipes can last over half a century. The sturdiest of the non-plastic pipes, cast iron, can have a lifespan of between 75 and 100 years. The lifespan of the pipes is also affected by how well they are taken care of and if you live in an area with hard water. Hard water hurts pipes. The good news is that the water in Bastrop County is considered soft.

There are types of plumbing pipes that need to be replaced even if they are working well. This is because they are frankly dangerous either to your health or to your home. The lead from lead pipes is famously toxic and can get into your drinking water. Galvanized steel pipes, which are steel pipes coated with impure zinc, have also been known to leach lead and dangerous contaminants into the drinking water as they break down. Polybutylene pipes are made of plastic, but they break so easily that they’re a constant danger to the house itself.

If you know what material your pipes are made of and how old they are, you can be on the lookout for signs that they need to be replaced. Some of those signs are:

  • Low water pressure
  • Leaks
  • Corroded pipes
  • Discolored water
  • Bad smells

Other signs that your plumbing may need repiping are strange noises such as creaks, wild swings in water temperature, and water that tastes and/or smells bad.
